Biography

Susan Hoover, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a breast surgical oncologist who specializes in breast cancer, benign breast disease, and minimally invasive breast surgical techniques.

Dr. Hoover earned her medical degree at UT Southwestern Medical School. She completed a residency in general surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she also received advanced training through a breast surgical oncology fellowship.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery, she rejoined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2026 and serves as Medical Director of Patient Access and Experience at UT Southwestern’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. A Dallas native, Dr. Hoover’s career spans over two decades, serving as faculty at UT Southwestern, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and, most recently, the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. At Moffitt, she was Program Director for the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship and Director of Education for the Department of Women’s Oncology and Breast Program.

She has a passion for surgical education and has spent a significant portion of her career teaching various learners, including medical students, residents, fellows, and surgical colleagues. She serves as Chair of the Breast Education and Self-Assessment Program Committee, which produces an educational platform for The American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS).

Dr. Hoover is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served on its Board of Governors. Her other professional memberships include the Society of Surgical Oncology, ASBrS, and the Association of Women Surgeons.

Dr. Hoover has delivered scores of presentations, contributed to books including Fischer’s Mastery of Surgery, and published numerous academic articles related to her areas of expertise.
