Biography

Rafael Cires-Drouet, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Division of Cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in pulmonary embolism and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, chronic venous disease, and anticoagulation management.

Dr. Cires-Drouet earned his medical degree at the Universidad de Guayaquil School of Medicine in Ecuador. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and gained advanced training in vascular medicine through a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Vascular Medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.

Previously, Dr. Cires-Drouet was the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team at the University of Maryland Medical Center Downtown (UMMC) Campus and Medical Director of the UMMC Midtown Campus in Baltimore.

He is a member of several professional associations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Vascular Medicine. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Vascular Medicine Journal, BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, BMC Pulmonary Medicine, and Thrombosis Journal.

Dr. Cires-Drouet receives funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Aging as a principal investigator. He has worked as a principal investigator and co-investigator in NIH, Veterans Affairs, and industry-funded research, primarily in heart failure, venous diseases, venous thromboembolism, and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

He has delivered numerous presentations, authored multiple peer-reviewed academic articles related to his areas of expertise, and contributed to the books Noninvasive Vascular Diagnosis and Vascular Disease in Older Adults.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Cires-Drouet enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, cooking, and doing DIY projects.
