Biography

As an 1988 graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School, (Alvin) Thomas Hyslop, M.D., joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern in 2012 following 20 years as a private practitioner in Dallas. He is also a member of the team of faculty physicians in the Comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynecology Program, and his office is conveniently located in the UT Southwestern Clinical Center at Park Cities.

A native of Texas, Dr. Hyslop received his B.S. in biology from Texas A&M University. Following medical school, he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Paul Medical Center before entering private practice.

Dr. Hyslop is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He provides a comprehensive range of obstetrical and gynecological services including both routine and high-risk pregnancy care as well as well-woman examinations, evaluation and treatment of gynecologic disorders, and gynecological surgery. Dr. Hyslop is trained in minimally invasive surgery, which can help resolve a patient’s issues with fewer side effects and faster recovery time. Although he enjoys surgical cases, Dr. Hyslop also enjoys helping patients find easy solutions that do not require major surgery. Patients who have significant menstrual irregularities can often benefit from minor remedies without major surgery.

In 2018, he was named a Super Doctor by Texas Monthly.

Meet Dr. Hyslop

A graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School, (Alvin) Thomas Hyslop, M.D., recently returned to UT Southwestern following 20 years in private practice. He says he is pleased to now be able to focus more on the care of his patients and delivering babies, without the distraction of operating a business.

Dr. Hyslop is also involved in teaching. His responsibilities include helping residents learn much more than they can get from a textbook. He says he enjoys being a mentor and guiding residents through the decision-making process while he performs surgery or delivers babies. The teaching he provides is real time at the bedside, which is an important addition to lessons taught in the classroom.

Dr. Hyslop is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He provides a comprehensive range of obstetrical and gynecological services including both routine and high-risk pregnancy care, as well as well-woman examinations, evaluation and treatment of gynecologic disorders, and gynecological surgery. In 2013, Dr. Hyslop was recognized by Dallas Child magazine as a “mom-approved doc.”

Dr. Hyslop enjoys his profession because he can be a part of a long phase of a person’s life, from before a woman’s reproductive years to well beyond that.

“Being an Ob/Gyn is a great opportunity to get to know patients and really bond with them as their long-term health care provider,” says Dr. Hyslop.

He especially enjoys being a part of women’s lives while they plan for children. He is able to get to know his patients’ families while he takes care of them over a span of time.

He also encourages patients to work with their doctors and to be vigilant with their health care. He advises that a regular checkup with a doctor is important to detect any small issues before they become a large problem. Dr. Hyslop wants to be a part of a woman’s life to help her stay healthy.

Dr. Hyslop’s office is located in the new UT Southwestern Clinical Center at Park Cities. This is a convenient setting for many of his patients who reside in the North Dallas area. In addition, he is excited to offer his patients a smaller, more intimate setting, while being connected to a large medical center with the most current research and state-of-the-art technology that includes spacious delivery and operating rooms with the latest equipment.

A longtime resident of Coppell, Dr. Hyslop is active in his local community, church, and school district. When away from work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.

Dr. Hyslop’s wife had placenta previa with their third child, and she was on bed rest at the hospital for a month before she delivered. Besides having to juggle the care of his patients with the care of his own family at home, the experience gave him new perspective on families dealing with high-risk pregnancy.
