Heart Month 2018: Rio King

Heart

Rio King

Meet Rio King, a marathoner and track runner. He was also one of several masters athletes who took part in our research on how exercise prolongs heart health. None of what we've learned would be possible without the help of Rio and our other study participants. When asked why he chose to take part, Rio said, "I wanted to help out. I don't think there’s a large population of older athletes like me to test, so I was, frankly, proud to be invited to help. My participation, I hoped, would help others. I'm proud to offer something if it’s of use.” With the help of Rio and our other amazing volunteers, we found that exercising four to five days a week in one’s 60s and 70s can lead to having a heart that’s indistinguishable from that of a healthy 30-year-old.
