Meet Dr. Nguyen
Anthony D. Nguyen, O.D., is an optometrist at UT Southwestern who offers comprehensive eye care to his patients. From routine eye exams to treating complex eye conditions, he provides thorough and compassionate care.
Primary Eye Care at UT Southwestern in Dallas
Dr. Nguyen joined the UT Southwestern team in August 2023. He spends most of his time at the eye clinic in Dallas and dedicates half a day each week to the Fort Worth clinic.
After completing his residency at the BronxCare Health System in New York and then working at Mount Sinai, Dr. Nguyen appreciates the diverse patient population and collaborative environment that a teaching hospital provides.
"Joining UT Southwestern was a natural continuation of my experience," he says.
Dr. Nguyen treats patients with various eye conditions, including vision loss, glaucoma, and corneal conditions. His residency in a hospital setting equipped him with the skills to manage and triage emergency cases effectively, he says.
"Although I may not be able to fully manage every complex case myself, my experience allows me to initially treat and stabilize the patient and subsequently ensure they receive the necessary specialized care in a timely manner," he explains.
Continuity of Care at UT Southwestern
As a medical-based optometrist, Dr. Nguyen is often the first line of defense for his patients. He addresses various conditions and ensures that those requiring specialized treatment are referred to the appropriate experts within the UT Southwestern network.
"If a patient comes in with a suspected retinal detachment, for example, I can examine them, confirm the issue, and then urgently refer them to one of our on-staff retinal specialists," Dr. Nguyen says. "This type of continuity of care offers reassurance that the patient is in good hands."
UT Southwestern's Patient-Centric Culture
"I enjoy building long-term relationships with my patients," he says. "As a therapeutic optometrist, my aim is to consistently work with them over the years to meet their eye health and vision care needs."
Dr. Nguyen values the opportunity to follow up with his patients after they receive advanced care from ophthalmologists. Many of these patients return to him for post-operative care, ongoing management, and routine eye health maintenance.
His dedication to high-quality eye care helps ensure his patients receive the best possible outcomes for their vision and overall eye health.
Personal Note
Dr. Nguyen is fluent in Vietnamese and proficient in exam-based Spanish, which allows him to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population.
When he’s not at work, he enjoys playing tennis, traveling, cooking and exploring different cuisines, and spending time with his wife and dog.
