Meet Dr. Dogan

S. Serdar Dogan, M.D., is a dedicated ophthalmologist at UT Southwestern, specializing in cornea transplants, cataract surgery, LASIK, and external diseases of the eye. His expertise spans a wide range of advanced treatments, from premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) and light-adjustable lenses (LALs) to laser vision correction.

Specialist in Cornea, External Disease, and Cataract Surgery at UT Southwestern

Originally practicing in Turkey, Dr. Dogan eventually moved to UT Southwestern, where he completed a fellowship and repeated his residency to gain U.S. certification, enriching his knowledge and skills in ophthalmology.

"Redoing my training at UT Southwestern allowed me a more detailed training in ophthalmology,” Dr. Dogan says. “My passion has always been focused on the anterior segment of the eye, and this opportunity allowed me to hone my skills.”

Personalized Cataract Surgery at UT Southwestern

Dr. Dogan primarily sees patients at UT Southwestern's Frisco campus. He believes in providing attentive, personalized care.

"Every patient is unique. I listen to their needs and desires, discuss different options, and then develop a treatment plan that uses the latest advancements to help offer the best possible outcomes for the individual," Dr. Dogan says.

Patients today have various options for cataract surgery, including IOLs that correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, or both. Dr. Dogan also fits patients with LALs, which can be adjusted after surgery to achieve the desired visual outcome.

"My goal is to ensure patients are happy with their vision and can enjoy a fuller life after cataract surgery," he says.

Advanced Cornea Transplants at UT Southwestern

Dr. Dogan's practice includes full and partial cornea transplants for patients of all ages who have scarring from infections, trauma, or hereditary diseases. He is skilled at Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), a partial corneal transplant procedure that replaces the innermost layer of the cornea with a donor cornea.

This less invasive treatment has several advantages and a high success rate. It is used for patients with Fuchs corneal dystrophy, corneal edema after cataract surgery, and failed corneal transplants.

Dr. Dogan is dedicated to advancing corneal surgery techniques and bringing the latest innovations to his patients.

"Each cornea transplant is unique, much like the patients we treat. It's incredibly fulfilling to restore vision and improve quality of life for individuals of all ages," Dr. Dogan adds. "Seeing a patient, especially a child, regain their sight is one of the most rewarding aspects of my practice."

LASIK Surgery at UT Southwestern

LASIK surgery is a popular eye surgery designed to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is known for its quick recovery time and high success rate, often eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Dr. Dogan regularly performs LASIK at his Dallas office and enjoys the quick, satisfying outcome this surgery offers his patients. Before he performs the surgery, he meets with the patient to first establish if they are a candidate and then to understand their goals and lifestyle.

"During this consultation, I can better understand the patient's needs, answer any questions or concerns, and gather information needed to create a treatment plan," Dr. Dogan says.

Although recovery from LASIK surgery is generally quick, with many patients noticing improved vision within 24 hours, Dr. Dogan ensures his patients receive continuous support.

"Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and ensure optimal results, but I am accessible at any time if a patient has questions," Dr. Dogan says.

Patient-Centric Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern

UT Southwestern, a premier academic medical center, is renowned for its research, education, and clinical care. Dr. Dogan values the collaborative environment, where specialists across fields work together to provide comprehensive care.

"I think patients find comfort at UT Southwestern because it offers them one place where all their medical needs can be met by skilled professionals and expert physicians," Dr. Dogan explains.

Dr. Dogan is dedicated to his patients, prioritizing their comfort and trust.

"Whether performing LASIK, cataract surgery, or a cornea transplant, I consider it a privilege to be available and supportive throughout my patient’s entire journey, from consultation to post-care," he says. "Knowing that I am positively impacting their lives gives me a strong sense of purpose. My goal is to provide the highest level of medical attention available while being fully present for my patients.”
