Biography

Linda M. Farkas, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in colorectal surgery.

Dr. Farkas earned her medical degree at the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. She completed a residency in general surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago, where she also spent a year doing research as a Pillsbury Scholar. She received advanced training in colon and rectal surgery through a fellowship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Dr. Farkas joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2019.

Dr. Farkas’s clinical interests include assessing risk for hereditary colon disorders and performing open, laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal colorectal surgery techniques. Her research and academic interests include hereditary colorectal cancer and perioperative care of surgical patients. She was the site principal investigator for randomized trials of laparoscopic versus open resections for rectal cancer and participated in an international trial of robotic versus laparoscopic resections for rectal cancer. 

Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Farkas was Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at UC Davis Medical Center and previously was an Associate Professor of Surgery at both Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While at UPMC, she instituted the Hereditary Colorectal Tumor Program, which increased services for high-risk patients.

Dr. Farkas is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
