New Agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield

We are pleased to share that Southwestern Health Resources (SWHR), which negotiates on behalf of UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) and Texas Health Resources (Texas Health), has secured a new three-year agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX).

UTSW and Texas Health care teams and hospitals, as well as providers included in SWHR’s clinically integrated network, are in network for BCBSTX plans.

Appointments from April 1 forward will be covered at in-network rates. You can keep your existing appointments and schedule new ones. Please be aware that BCBSTX has notified us that it may take several weeks for its systems to update. If you receive an erroneous message stating that UTSW or Texas Health is out of network or you are quoted out-of-network rates, please be assured that in-network rates apply.

Which BCBSTX plans are in network?

UT Southwestern and Texas Health Resources care locations and affiliated providers in the SWHR clinically integrated network are in network for the following BCBSTX plans:

What if I was seen during the brief period that UTSW and Texas Health were out of network with BCBSTX plans?

The previous contract between BCBSTX and UTSW and Texas Health expired at 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2025. The new contract has been backdated to April 1, 2025. All patients seen during the first week of April will have appointments, procedures, imaging, surgeries, and all other visits honored at in-network rates.

If I received care on April 1, 2025, or later, will I be covered as in network?

Yes. Appointments from April 1 forward will be covered at in-network rates.

I received approval for Continuity of Care benefits. Is there anything I need to do?

If you qualified for and received Continuity of Care benefits, you should proceed with your treatment plans as approved.

If I did not receive approval for Continuity of Care benefits, what should I do?

If you did not receive Continuity of Care benefit approval, you should now be clear to proceed with care plans.

I was reassigned to another in-network provider, but I would like to continue to see my preferred provider. What should I do?

Patients who were reassigned to another provider will be able to switch back to their preferred doctor as soon as BCBSTX reloads providers into its system.

I canceled my appointment. Can I reschedule?

Yes! Patients who canceled their appointment or procedure may reschedule and will receive in-network rates.

What if I don’t see my physician or care location listed as in network with BCBSTX?

It will take BCBSTX time to update its systems to include Texas Health and UT Southwestern care locations and affiliated providers. If you receive an erroneous message stating that UTSW or Texas Health is out of network, please be assured that in-network rates apply and reach out to the BCBSTX member number on the back of your card.

If my insurance plan requires a referral to be seen at UTSW or Texas Health, how does the BCBSTX administrative delay impact me?

We understand that a potential delay in care while waiting for BCBSTX to update its systems is frustrating. That is why UTSW and Texas Health have agreed to continue seeing patients and honoring their in-network coverage during this transition period and are committed to working with BCBSTX to remove any barriers to access. Should you experience difficulties during this transition period, please contact BCBSTX at the number listed on your insurance card.
