Meet Dr. Blomquist

Dallas Ophthalmologist

As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, Preston H. Blomquist, M.D., cares for a wide gamut of ocular diseases, from cataracts and glaucoma to ocular damage caused by diabetes and medications. He is Professor and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

"As ophthalmologists, we can have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life. Some surgeries we perform result in improved vision, which, literally, can occur overnight.”

Dr. Blomquist began his career at a transformational time in cataract surgery, the most common surgery performed worldwide. Thanks to technological advances in intraocular lens (IOL) implant design and surgical devices like the femtosecond laser, today’s cataract patients undergoing surgery experience better outcomes and less disruption to their lives. A safe and reliable procedure is now even better, explains Dr. Blomquist. For example, incision sizes are smaller, which promotes faster healing, while laser use reduces reliance on hand-held tools with blades.

“Cataract surgery has become a more pleasant operative experience for the patient. The surgical outcome cannot be underestimated: not only do patients see better, many of them achieve freedom from glasses,” Dr. Blomquist says.

For Dr. Blomquist, improving patients’ quality of life provides tremendous job satisfaction.

“Ophthalmology is that rare specialty that combines the need for diagnostic acumen with the technical skill set of the surgeon, all while allowing the doctor to develop long-term relationships with patients who may need a lifetime of treatment, and to intervene decisively in other patients’ care with treatments to eradicate disease,” Dr. Blomquist says.
