Specialized Care with a Singular Focus

Head and neck cancers include cancer of the thyroid, mouth, larynx, throat, tongue, nose, and nasal cavity as well as skin cancers of the head or neck.

UT Southwestern’s team of head and neck cancer specialists treats only head and neck cancer, giving us a level of expertise that is on par with top U.S. cancer programs.

Our integrated team includes radiation and medical oncologists, oral and reconstructive surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, and speech pathologists. We collaborate closely on each case, ensuring that every patient benefits from the combined knowledge of all specialties.

Causes of Head and Neck Cancers

Head and neck cancers are twice as common in men. Alcohol and tobacco use are the two most common causes of head and neck cancers, especially cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. Infection with HPV is also a risk factor for some head and neck cancers. Learn more about other risk factors.

Services

We offer the most advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques available for head and neck cancer. With an early and accurate diagnosis, these types of cancer are often curable.

Once we have an accurate diagnosis, we establish a personalized plan of care with all of the latest treatment options at our fingertips, including access to specialized clinical trials.

We also offer a wide range of support services that help patients and their families through this challenging time.

Our treatments and follow-up focus not only on keeping patients free of cancer, but also on restoring or preserving vital functions such as breathing, speaking, and swallowing. It’s important for every patient to move on from his or her cancer experience with the best quality of life possible.
