UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team is committed to helping patients achieve the highest possible level of physical, functional, and cognitive independence after an injury or illness.

We are a major referral center for patients requiring rehabilitative care. All of our physicians are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, many with advanced certifications in specialty areas.

We provide comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation, acute inpatient consultation and care, and outpatient services to patients affected by conditions that limit mobility and function.

We are one of the premier physician and therapist training centers in the country and the only program in North Texas conducting both translational and clinical research in the areas of brain injury/concussion, burn rehabilitation, stroke, ambulation and falls, epilepsy, and spinal cord injury.

To assist and encourage our patients and family members, we offer support groups for spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, and limb loss. These groups offer valuable interaction between staff, patients, and family members during all phases of recovery.

Recovering from COVID-19: How to Rehab at Home

COVID-19 is a respiratory infection that can exact a significant toll on the body. Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists at UT Southwestern’s O’Donnell Brain Institute have designed a rehab program specifically for patients recovering from COVID-19. All the exercises can be done from home with no equipment and are focused on rebuilding your lung and muscle function.

Begin with the breathing exercises because research has shown COVID-19 patients might lose some lung function.
Flexibility and mobility exercises will help strengthen muscle groups that might have weakened during a hospital stay.
Overall conditioning exercises are also recommended to recover balance and good posture.
