Biography

Jessica Shields, D.O., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a fellowship-trained, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon (FMIGS) who specializes in complex pelvic surgery for benign gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, and uterine fibroids.

Dr. Shields’ aim is to provide compassionate, comprehensive, and evidence-based patient-centered care. Her practice is guided by her belief that optimal treatment outcomes begin in the office with a detailed discussion of symptoms, along with understanding her patients’ needs and goals. This approach is especially important for her patients suffering from pain. Assessing and addressing all pain sources, not just those that can be ameliorated with surgery, informs her multimodal and multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Dr. Shields earned her medical degree at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the State University of New York at Buffalo and a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at UT Southwestern.

Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology with focused practice designation in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2019 upon completion of her fellowship.

Dr. Shields is the Associate Program Director of the UT Southwestern Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. She also serves on several departmental and university committees focused on quality in health care. Her clinical interests include the treatment of endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, and fertility-preserving treatment and surgery.

She is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the AAGL (formerly the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists), for which she serves on the Abstract Review Committee. She also serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology and was named a Top Reviewer for the journal in 2020. She is an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Doody’s Review Service.

Dr. Shields has delivered numerous national and regional invited lectures and published academic articles related to her areas of expertise.
