Sports, Joint Pain, and You – How Activities Impact Arthritis

High-impact and contact sports increase the risk of joint arthritis, potentially leading to the eventual need for hip or knee replacements. We work with patients to balance their physical goals with the long-term preservation of the prosthetic joint.

The Future of Joint Surgery

We use robotics and augmented reality to provide highly personalized joint replacements tailored to a patient's specific anatomy and lifestyle. Some of the technology is unique to UT Southwestern.

Navigating Joint Revision Surgery

We specialize in complex joint revision surgeries to address failed or painful joint replacements caused by infection, loosening, or instability. Our surgeons focus on diagnosing the underlying cause of pain and educating patients on their options.

Joint Pain 101 – How Arthritis Affects your Knees and Hips

Arthritis occurs when joint cartilage wears away due to factors like genetics, previous injuries, inflammatory diseases, or general wear and tear from strenuous physical activity. We provide comprehensive care for people with joint pain.

Finding Relief – Is it Time for Joint Surgery?

When patients visit us, we pursue nonsurgical options first, such as diet, medication, and injections to manage joint pain. Patients should consider surgical options when arthritis significantly diminishes their quality of life.

Understanding Joint Replacement and Repairs

Joint replacements may need revision due to natural wear of components, and can often be upgraded with more durable materials. We use the latest technologies to diagnose and treat pain in long-standing and recent joint replacements.

What Are Some of the Innovations in Orthopedics that UT Southwestern Has Led?

These are just a few examples of how UT Southwestern has advanced excellence and expanded the field of orthopedics:

  • Hip joint preservation surgery, hip resurfacing, and minimally invasive muscle-sparing hip surgery: We are among a small number of surgeons in Texas pioneering arthroscopic hip surgery, hip preservation surgery, and minimally invasive hip surgery.
  • Innovative shoulder procedures, including total shoulder replacement and reverse total shoulder replacement: UT Southwestern is among a small number of hospitals to offer this treatment to help patients with severe rotator cuff damage and its complications. With these surgeries, we can reverse the joint’s ball-and-socket configuration, allowing a patient to use a different set of muscles to move the arm.
  • Pioneering minimally invasive percutaneous surgery, especially for fractures of the acetabulum (the bowl-shaped spot on each side of the pelvis where the leg bone fits): This surgical technique allows for incisions that are so small that the wounds don’t break open during healing (dehiscence).
  • Robotic redo (revision) hip replacements: UT Southwestern was the first hospital in North Texas to offer this surgical option.
  • Spine care: The UT Southwestern Spine Center is the only group in Texas involved in an acclaimed 20-year international study (“The Foundation of a New Paradigm of Disc Degeneration: The Twin Spine Study”) to understand why back and neck pain occur and find ways to improve treatment.

What Rehabilitation Services Does UT Southwestern Offer for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Patients?

UT Southwestern orthopedic rehabilitation specialists provide valuable therapies to help patients reduce pain, increase flexibility and mobility, recover lost functions, and achieve a greatly improved state of health. We offer:

  • Effective rehabilitative therapy for hip and knee replacement, broken bones, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, foot and ankle fractures, flat feet, herniated and bulging discs, osteoporosis, sciatica, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tears, and many other orthopedic concerns
  • Personalized postsurgical rehabilitative care, which is often vital to helping patients regain motion and quality of life

Nurses, neuropsychologists, psychologists, and occupational, physical, and recreational therapists are part of the UT Southwestern orthopedic rehabilitation program. This is the foundation for our team approach to care and providing patients with knowledge and specialized training to achieve the best possible results from therapy.
